Jan. 11 (Fri.) 6 pm. A Musical Tribute in Memory of Wanda Martin, “Eyes on the Prize ... Where Do We Go from Here?” is being present by the TN Cultural Heritage Preservation Society to promote the preservation of local and national African-American history and heritage efforts. Ms. Martin was deputy director of Comprehensive Planning for the Div. of Planning and Development and was highly respected for her role in historic preservation and advocacy for social justice and community development. The program will be presented at Rhodes College in the Hardie Auditorium. $30; $15 for students. Jan. 24 (Thurs.) 6 pm. Pearl Fryar Lecture. Mr. Fryar, the subject of the film “A Man Named Pearl,” will share his experience of creating a topiary wonderland that quietly changed and unified his community, the poorest county in South Carolina. His garden is one of 17 on the American Conservancy list and his story brings a message of hope and healing. Memphis Botanic Garden. $10.
Jan. 25 - Feb. 1, “A Man Named Pearl,” an award winning film, tells the story of Pearl Fryar, an African American man in his mid-60s who challenged stereotypes by creating a garden paradise in his own yard. The documentary by UT graduate Scott Galloway, will show at Malco’s Ridgeway Theater. A Lecture and movie package ticket is available through Memphis Botanic Garden for $23. For info. call 576-4121.
Feb. 6-8 (Wed. - Fri.) 2008 Clean Water Network Conference. This conference will focus on water quality issues of the lower Mississippi River and will be held at the Fogelman Executive Center (330 Innovation Dr.) on the University of Memphis campus.
