Appalachicola, FL was once the 3rd busiest port in the Gulf of Mexico (behind New Orleans and Mobile). In the late 19th century and early 1900s, the sponge trade was the major industry. Today more than 90% of Florida's oyster production is harvested from Appalachicola Bay. Visitors are attracted by its charm, authenticity, and outdoor living.
